Wednesday’s Derbydella Madonnina in the Coppa Italia is vital for both AC Milan and Inter. The Rossoneri are in desperate need of turning their poor form around, while Inter are still dreaming of a potential double-winning campaign this season.
Milan, who are acting as Wednesday’s hosts despite sharing the San Siro with Inter, lost the first Derbydella Madonnina of the season back in October, with Mauro Icardi notching a hat trick to gift the Nerazzurri all three points.
Here are four battles to look out for on Wednesday.
4. André Silva vs Samir Handanović
André Silva is yet to find the back of the net in the Serie A this season, despite scoring six in the Europa League group stages.
The Portuguese striker completed a €38m to the San Siro from FC Porto over summer, however, Silva hasn’t lived up to expectation and will be going head-to-head with one of the best goalkeepers in Europe this season in Samir Handanović.
3. Giacomo Bonaventura vs Matías Vecino
There is an argument to suggest that no AC Milan player can hold their head high this season. However, Giacomo Bonaventura would be at the top of most Rossoneri fans’ lists along with Spanish winger Suso.
The Italian midfielder will be facing up against Matías Vecino, who completed a €24m move from Fiorentina over the summer, with the Uruguayan midfielder being outstanding in his 16 appearances this season.
2. Suso vs Milan Škriniar
Suso’s red card in a 3-0 defeat to Hellas Verona saw the Spaniard miss Milan’s dismal display against Atalanta at the weekend. However, the 24-year-old will be returning for the Rossoneri on Wednesday and will be desperate to add to his seven goals and seven assists across all competitions this season.
Although Inter’s Milan Škriniar won’t be the man directly responsible for keeping Suso at bay, the 22-year-old defender will be aware of the winger’s danger when cutting inside and his ability to split the two centre-backs with deadly accurate passing.
1. Mauro Icardi vs Gianluigi Donnarumma
For anyone who’s been keeping at least one eye on the Serie A this season, the form of Mauro Icardi hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The Argentine striker has already scored 17 goals in the league – more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – and is coming up against a goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is under pressure to find his best form once again.
