Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon says Atalanta are eager to get back in action and feels the Orobici ‘improve every year’.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men finished third in Serie A last season and reached the quarter-finals in the Champions League, something that obviously gives the players confidence ahead of the new season.
De Roon admitted they have had a ‘short holiday’, but the midfielder just wants to get back on the pitch.
“There’s a great desire to return, we have had a short holiday, but we are charged and ready to play,” De Roon told Sky Sport Italia.
“We have managed to improve every year. First, we thought fourth was the best, then we reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“Castagne left, but we bought four or five players and I have already seen two or three at work, and they are strong,” De Roon added.
“Then [Aleksei] Miranchuk will arrive and [Josip] Ilicic could return. We have a strong enough team.”
Josip Ilicic missed the last part of the season but has returned to the group and De Roon said they hope to have him back ‘as soon as possible’.
“Josip still needs some time, he is training, he’s not in his best shape physically. But he’s recovering.
“We hope to have him with us as soon as possible because we are even stronger with his qualities.”
Atalanta start with an away match against Torino on Saturday but De Roon wants to wait a few months to see where the Orobici are placed in the League before talking about a Scudetto battle.
“Juventus and Inter, and perhaps Napoli can play for the title,” he said. “We will see in three to four months how we are placed in the table.
“It would be great to repeat what we did last season.”
