Inter have become the latest team from around Europe to be credited with an interest in Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
The Serbian has struggled with injury at points this season and has featured in six games across the Premier League and Europa League, with Scott McTominay and Fred currently Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s favoured central midfield pairing.
Paul Pogba’s return from injury would push Matic further down the pecking order at Old Trafford, and the Telegraph now claim Inter are interested in securing his signature as Antonio Conte searches for reinforcements in midfield.
Stefano Sensi and Nicolo Barella are both currently sidelined, resulting in the previously absent Borja Valero featuring in the Serie A club’s starting XI in recent weeks. Roberto Gagliardini has also had knocks to deal with.
Matic was immediately linked with a move to Tottenham when Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino in north London, but those rumours have died down and a move to Inter would make more sense for his career.
The Red Devils have the choice to trigger an extension in the 31-year-old’s contract – stretching the deal until the end of next season – but an offer from Inter in January would leave the Premier League side considering whether to cash in immediately.
United offloaded both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to the San Siro outfit during the summer transfer window as Solskjaer looked to streamline his squad.
While Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic is another player Inter are looking at, Conte and Matic have experienced success working together previously at Chelsea as they helped the Blues win the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season. Matic was then allowed to jump ship to Mourinho’s United – seen by many as an outrageous coup which, in hindsight, hasn’t worked out as well as previously
